One killed, 25 injured in Varanasi blast
A blast rocked the ghaat of the Ganges in Varanasi on Tuesday as the evening aarti was going to commence at the Sheetla ghaat, leaving one 2-year old girl child dead and at least 25, including some foreign tourists, injured.

An Italian and a French national were among the injured.

Banned outfit Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility in an email to various media houses. It said the bomb was exploded in protest against the ruling of the Ayodha verdict by Allahabad High Court earlier this year and also the clean chit given to CM Narendra Modi in Gujarat riots case by the Supreme Court appointed SIT.
After land scams rocking the BJP government in Karnataka, the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu is now facing charges of misuse of discretionary powers in allotting prime land to scores of people, including MLAs, politicians and top bureaucrats.

Information obtained through an RTI query has revealed prime land was allotted to a judge of the Madras High Court, a retired judge, kin of a state minister, DMK and Congress MLAs, and ruling party functionaries and a top Intelligence official among others allegedly in violation of norms.
In a swift move, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) early Wednesday raided the residences of former telecom minister A Raja in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

Simultaneous raids started at 7.30 am at his residences in Delhi and Chennai.

The raids are also being carried out at the residences of former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's Personal Secretary R K Chandolia, Member Telecom K Sridhar and Deputy Director General, DoT, A K Srivastava.
The Union Home Ministry has sounded a nationwide alert with special stress on four major cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad - in wake of the blast in Varanasi.

"A general alert has been sent to all state governments and they have been asked to stay on high alert," Union Home Secretary G K Pillai said here.

"It was low intensity blast which occurred at about 6.20 pm in which three-four people were injured. Subsequently we understand there could have been a stampede...as a result 15-20 people were injured. So roughly 20-25 people injured," he said.
Continuing with its practise of sending e-mails using unsecured WiFi connections to media houses within minutes of the blasts it orchestrates, the banned Indian Mujahideen (IM) on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the blast in Varanasi, "attributing" it to 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid and warned of more such attacks.

In a five-page email dated December 06, the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition, the IM, which was responsible for a series of previous terror attacks in India, warned that it would carry out similar attacks "very soon".

US, allies urge China to rein in N Korea
The United States, South Korea and Japan on Monday all urged China to help rein in its ally North Korea and vowed solidarity in defending Seoul from any further attacks from the North.

However, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her counterparts Kim Sung-Hwan of South Korea and Seiji Maehara of Japan, who met in Washington were vague about how they would deal with North Korea's "belligerent" behavior.

The three-way meeting comes after North Korea shelled a South Korean border island on November 23, killing two marines and two civilians, and after it revealed a uranium enrichment program that alarmed US scientists.
